the undomestic goddess review by the domesticated goddess

i finally finished reading the book. in between doing the dishes, the laundry, house cleaning, cooking, work, and what not.

it was a good read, not too much plot to make you think hard. actually, i even think there is a lack of conflict where i expect them to be. Samantha's (the main character) thoughts will make you expect there's gonna be a huge bump to cross, but then, there won't be any. is this a way of saying that in reality, women tend to over-analyze things and worry, when there really isn't much to worry about? hehehe! like for example, Nathaniel (her love interest) had this "No Lawyers" sign on his pub, and the story about his father's death seem dark enough to put a huge conflict in Samantha's being a lawyer. but when the time came she confessed she is a lawyer by profession, it only took him like what, a couple of minutes to understand everything? it may be possible in real life, but based on what i've read, i don't think Nathaniel's character was fully developed to make me believe that he is indeed THAT understanding. ok, maybe i am over-analyzing things. =P

on the plus side, i loooove the play with words. it kind of reminds me of Jessica Zafra's style of writing. only, Zafra is more "twisted". kinsella put it in a way that makes me think i'm reading somebody else's blog from start to finish. it feels personal. like being inside somebody else's mind. all her confusion, fears, joys, stupid antics... women will enjoy this book more than men will. men cannot relate to the torture of finding the proper way to flirt, and how to bounce back from an awkward moment with somebody you are interested in. career women will have extra spots of recognition in this novel too. i found myself nodding in agreement when Samantha was anxious to check her email every so often, not wanting to miss out on anything new that might be going on. i will shamelessly agree that i check my personal email almost every 15 minutes when at work. hehe! =P

and, once an undomestic "goddess" myself, i can fairly relate to her problems of finding out how stuff in the kitchen works, how to cook, how to clean the house, how to do the laundry. i'm still a work in progress when it comes to separating the whites from the coloreds, to the subtly colored, to those that need to be handwashed. i've learned to consult a product's manual when all else fails, and i'm doing my best to cook something that actually has a name. =)

  • haha ... i suppose us women truly have a knack for over-analyzing situations ... although, i would have to agree with you, men (like Nathaniel), aren't usually that understanding. joke lang sa mga lalaking nagbabasa nitong comment na ito :-P
