when in Rome....

...do as the Romans do. But this is no Rome, this is Florida!

Last Sunday, we went to an Old Roman Catholic Church. It's just a few minutes drive from home, so we decided to check it out, baka mas malapit than the other church na pinagsisimbahan namin. We got there 15 minutes early para sa English mass nila. Nakipagkuwentuhan muna ako sa cellphone with my Bro, habang naghihintay kami sa parking lot. There's a Latin mass at around 8am. Cool sana ng Latin, pero di naman kami marunong umintindi non. =P

Pagpasok namin, maliit lang yung place, parang chapel lang. The type where everybody knows everybody else. I was surprised na makakita ng images ng Sto. NiƱo don, at images nila St. Clare, St. Francis of Assissi at ni Mama Mary. So intay pa kami ng ilang minutes. Then it started...

Grabe, Old Roman talaga ang mass! As in OLD ROMAN! Parang ibang religion nga yung dating eh, kasi ibang-iba sa nakagawian natin na mass... Alfredo and I talked about it pagkatapos nung misa. Here you go:

- nakatalikod yung pari sa tao. parang kausap nya yung altar, all the time na nagdadasal sya, dun sya nakaharap, except nung homily na.

- they use thee, thy, shalt, sitteth, thoust, art, at kung anu-ano pa. nakakabulol!

- instead of "and also with you", "and with thy spirit" ang reply nila.

- twice ni-recite yung "i confess to Almighty God...". ano ba tawag sa prayer na yon? anyways, una nung sa usual na part nya, yung second, before the communion.

- they mention the saints sa prayers. pati mga cherubin at seraphim, they mentioned it.

- ni-recite din yung "Hail, Holy Queen..." at "Hail Mary".

- may part na matagal nakaluhod. i think after the wedding mass, that was the second longest time na nakaluhod ako sa pew. halos di nga ako makatayo eh. =P

- they just recite the "Our Father" at di sila naghahawak kamay. kami lang ata ni Je ang magkahawak ang kamay.

- when you want to take the communion, you need to kneel sa altar, at hintayin mong puntahan ka ng pari.

Ayun lang, nakakatuwa. Siguro kung yung Latin mass yung pinuntahan namin, mas full-effect no? Sad to say, we're on a mission to find another church that's within the vicinity. Old Roman is nice, but I don't think that's how I wanted to celebrate the mass. Mas may tendency na mag-drift yung isip ko, kasi nga halos lahat, yung pari ang nagdadasal. I still prefer yung nakagawian natin.

  • weird... old school talaga dyan ah he-he.

tapos dalawa yung sermon??? i'll take the whole solemnity thing pero 1 long sermon is enough. kelangan pa ba dalawa? kung napapakain ba sana ng sermon yung mga naghihirap eh no problem! :D la lang

  • wow! I've always wanted to go to an Old Roman mass. Apparently nga, there are different kinds of masses - Byzantine, Tridentine, etc. And meron Byzantine Church dito, kaso natatakot ako baka di "sanctioned" ng Church to go there.

Pero at least, I know na, through what you've experienced. Thanks!
